Poodle coat cannot be painted on — it has to be built. Each curl is pushed into the clay surface individually with a fine tool, which is why a Poodle figurine takes noticeably longer than a smooth-coated dog of the same size.

Sculpting a Poodle
The curls are made by pressing and twisting a rounded tool into leather-hard clay, working in overlapping rows from the rear forward. Done in the wrong order the rows flatten each other and the coat reads as texture rather than curl.
How your Poodle was clipped changes the whole silhouette. A dog in a puppy clip, a lamb clip, or grown out shaggy are three different sculptures. Send a photo from the last groom you liked.
The head is a narrow wedge under all that coat. Sculpt the coat first and the underlying skull ends up too round, giving a Bichon rather than a Poodle.
What we look for in your photos
- Topknot shape and how high it sits.
- Whether the ears were left long and feathered or trimmed close.
- Tail carriage — up and alert, and docked or full.
- Colour: apricot, red, cream, black, silver, parti. Apricot and red shift most in the kiln, so we glaze a shade light.

Typical adult weight is Toy 3–4 kg · Miniature 7–8 kg · Standard 20–32 kg. Toy and Miniature take size S. Standards need size L — see the size guide, as Standards vary more than most breeds.
